WED: 7 Ways to Do Your Own Part

Date Created: 26/05/2020
World Environment Day (WED), means extra motivation and further opportunities to take action on a truly important issue, not only for those who love trees, rivers, mountains, the sun and nature in general, but also for all others who are rightfully too busy with their interests or their problems. Helping our planet prosper or at least keeping it alive, is not just a beautiful act, it’s a responsible one too.

What’s helpful about official world days’ existence is that it makes positive publicity and actual participation for something that matters much easier. It’s not uncommon to see activity on social media around a serious topic during, such occasions by people who are mostly interested in their image or who serve a specific purpose by being influencers. And this isn’t something to criticize those individuals for, but a reason to come together as humans by being eager to create something bigger. Because when there is a lot of talk or noise about an issue, at the end of the day an inducement will follow.

So, let’s take down a series of easy, everyday acts that will help us benefit mother Earth. The 5th of June is a great cause to unlock sensitivity.

Here are some examples:

1. Make small changes to everyday lifestyle
When several people start taking shorter baths, spending less resources while cooking and unplugging their phone charger when there is no need to keep plugging, a positive change will come as a result.

All the other examples below are about routine changes too, but it’s just easier to start by keeping in mind that small everyday changes matter as well. Therefore, if what’s needed is a piece of paper on the refrigerator or a small notebook that reminds us of what we need to do for the environment; let’s go for it and write down a list of some easy “good” everyday actions and place it somewhere it’s impossible to miss.

2. Make recycling and reusing a habit
Packaging materials are usually recyclable or at least reusable. What this means is that there’s extra room to do another good deed each time we’re about to throw something away.

However, there are some serious cautions one needs to consider in the process of recycling. By not cleaning whatever we throw on the recycling bin, we are making some people’s work more difficult, and at the same time by throwing non-recyclable stuff we are making it even worse.

Recyclable materials include paper and cardboard, aluminum, brass and bronze, cast iron, copper, steel and tin, and of course, plastic.

3. Eat responsibly once a week
Meat is tempting for sure. Not only does it add flavor and further satisfaction to whatever one’s eating, but it also helps stop hunger much easier. On the other hand, according to a research from the University of Oxford, eating a vegan diet could be the most effective way to reduce negative environmental impact.

So, even if it isn’t a desirable option, for sure it’s not that bad to go vegan or vegetarian once a week. Let’s not forget that local greengrocers use less damaging packaging compared to the major supermarkets too.

4. Take care of leftovers
Coming to leftovers, it’s not difficult to think of at least one occasion in which we threw away food along with garbage. This means money waste, as well as extra food scarcity for some poorer people.

What we can do is freeze our food, use a compost bin and go by ‘use-by’ dates rather than ‘sell-by’ dates. Those are all ways with which we can help cut down on food waste.

5. Know the consequence of buying clothes
Trends and fashion are nice, but are they environmentally friendly, too? The answer is most likely not. Clothing manufacturers are nowadays thinking of all those different ways with which they can reduce their costs and those others with which they can manufacture clothes as fast as possible. This means that people can buy clothes regardless of income regularly, but also that the environment is not taken care of at all.

When we buy too many clothes, we are encouraging a system that causes water pollution, the use of toxic chemicals and increases levels of textile wastes. If we care about acting up on this, we can either switch to eco-friendly or just not buy so often.

6. Save water
By simply trying to understand how much water is used during daily activities one may be shocked. For sure we can be more conscious when it comes to showering, cooking and garden watering. But there is more.

Some other of our daily activities in which too much water could be wasted include using our toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket, leaving the water on while brushing our teeth, using the washing machine too often without it being full and so on. The higher the number of people doing such things carelessly is, the greater the cause to the environment comes as a result.

7. Use a bicycle or just walk
Things are plain simple here. We can simply walk or use a bicycle when the workplace is not far away from home one. Yes, using a car is easier, but finding an opportunity to work out and at the same time stop causing pollution is better. Once walking or cycling to work becomes a part of daily routine, apart from helping the environment, a change in fitness may be visible as well.
